5 Ways to Prevent Problems with Diabetes and Oral Health

When you’re diabetic, you run a higher risk of having major dental problems. But you can prevent many problems with diabetes and teeth with these five simple steps.

Monitor Your Diabetes and Oral Health

If you have diabetes, it’s vital to watch your blood sugar and prevent it from getting too high or you put yourself at greater risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease. But by keeping your blood sugar under control, you can save yourself from these dental dangers.

Check for Signs of Dental Distress

Since periodontal disease and diabetes go hand-in-hand, you need to frequently check for early signs of problems. The most common include:

  • Swollen, sore gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Dry mouth
  • Oral pain
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these signs, go to your dentist immediately.

Brush Up on Your Brushing Habits

You need to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and preferably after every meal and snack. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a very gentle touch to avoid doing dental damage. This will keep your teeth and gums clean, which will reduce your risk of becoming one of the many people who experience both periodontal disease and diabetes.

Floss at Least Once a Day

Daily flossing removes the plaque between your teeth where your toothbrush just can’t reach. If this plaque is not removed, it can lead to complications with diabetes and teeth.

Go to the Dentist Regularly

Since prevention is your best protection, make sure that you visit your dentist for check-ups and cleanings at least twice a year. If you have a history of diabetes and oral health problems, you may need to go more often.
