All About Miami, FL

History of Miami

The Tequesta tribe inhabited the area now called Miami for about 2,000 years before European settlers arrived in North America. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés claimed the area as a Spanish territory in 1566, and a mission was established the next year. By the mid-1800s, Fort Dallas was built in what is now present-day Miami. As the area grew, it was referred to as Biscayne Bay Country. During the Great Freeze of 1894, the citrus crops in Miami were the only ones in Florida to survive the frost. Local citrus farmer Julia Tuttle used this to persuade railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to expand the East Coast Railway to Miami. Miami officially became a city on July 28, 1896.

Miami prospered until the end of the Florida land boom in the 1920s, which coincided with the 1926 Great Miami Hurricane and then the Great Depression. Due to Miami’s location, it played an essential role in protecting the United States against enemy submarines during World War II, and the overall war effort caused the population to swell. The Cuban Revolution then led to a massive influx of Cuban refugees into Miami. Today, Miami is a major international city.

Location Information

Miami is located on the north end of Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach and South Beach are located on the barrier islands of the bay. Most Miami neighborhoods are located about six feet above sea level. The highest points in the city lie along the Miami Rock Ridge. The city and its suburbs are mainly situated on a plain between Biscayne Bay to the east and the Everglades to the west.

Weather-wise, Miami is categorized as having a tropical monsoon climate. The summers are hot and humid, and the winters are short, warm, and much drier than the summers. Miami’s location on the coast, low elevation, and nearness to the Tropic of Cancer all contribute to its typical warm weather. However, the city’s location has also left it vulnerable to hurricanes; Hurricane Andrew caused considerable damage to the Miami area.

Animal-lovers will also want to check out Zoo Miami, home to more than 50 different species. You could also take a stroll through Wynwood, the city’s hip arts district, and look at the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor mural exhibit. And sports fans will find games going on all year long in Miami, as the city has a team in every major league: the Miami Marlins (MLB), Miami Heat (NBA), Florida Panthers (NHL), and Miami Dolphins (NFL).
